If your Home in Batavia, Geneva (or anywhere in the Western suburbs) has a basement, you’re likely to have a Sump Pump to deal with unwanted rain runoff and groundwater. Usually the Sump Pump is located at the lowest part of the home in a round basin below floor level. As the basin fills up, the sump pump engages and sends the water out a through discharge pipe or hose. Sometimes that water has to travel upward quite a distance. When the pump stops, gravity will likely take over and dump whatever water is left in the line back into the basin… That starts the cycle over again. That’s where the handy “Check Valve” comes in. They come in all shapes and varieties, but generally work the same. The green one pictured here has a little flap that allows water to flow in only one direction. Now, when water is pumped up, it can’t drop back down beyond the check valve. That should save some wear and tear on your pump.
